Drawing Inspiration. My work and theirs

21/02/16

My work was inspired by Carolina Melis' detail in some of her work. I did some drawing with the sewing machine and some sewing by hand, in some of her work she does sewing. In one of her pieces she had a detailed bird and it reminded me of my drawings with the sewing machine when looking at this piece of hers, I'm not entirely sure what reminded of my work when looking at this piece of hers, but looking at some of the detail on this bird of hers it reminded me of my drawing with the sewing machine, i think it might have been the thread i used because i sewed it all over the birds i was doing and the sewing lines came out really dark and thick and this is what her drawing of this bird reminds me of in my own work. I really like how the sewing lines came out in my drawings with the sewing machine, I like how when looking at this bird of Carolina Melis' reminds me of my own work.

My work was inspired by Migy's bright use of colour. I did some collages which i stuck onto an A1 sized page, some of them are really bright. When looking at Migy's work her's is really bright and some of the colours i used for my collages were really bright too and i used for most of them human eyes as their eyes (the birds eyes), Migy uses bright colours and she also made some of her work cartoonish, dressing her birds up as humans in human clothes. I used human eyes for the birds eyes and bright colours for some of my collages.

My work wasn't too inspired by Peter sis' work. In one of his pieces he used a large range of different birds and gathered them all together onto one giant bird, i used a large range of different birds well doing my experiments. I can only say that using a large range of different birds was the inspiration i got from him.

My work was inspired by Saul Steinberg's choice of using different types of paper. I did some mono printing for some of my experiments and when doing these prints i decided to use different tpes of paper to see what effects i could get. I used normal plain paper, tracing paper, squared/ graph paper etc. from doing this i could see what effects came out when using the papers. I found that this was different and good to see what outcomes you can get when trying something different in your work.

Printmaking Inspiration. My work and theirs

21/02/16

Between my work and Chris Andrews' I think that i was inspired with how simple he made his prints. I liked how my prints came out because I couldn't quit get them in the right position they all came out all over the place but they all looked fairly simple and i think that my prints have a similar simple look like Chris Andrews' prints.
I also liked the colours that Chris Andrews used for his prints and i used a good colour combination on my prints. I liked the colours i chose because they worked so well together.

Between my work and Kate Gibb's I think that i wasn't that inspired by her work. But looking back at my work and at one of her pieces of a bird which has been broken into like glass pieces, i think that i could say it may i have been inspired by this piece because my prints aren't all in the right position where there supposed to be, it's like they are broken into pieces around the bird.
I like the outcomes i got as they do look like they have been slightly inspired by some of Kate Gibb's work.

Between my work and Nadia Taylor's I think that I may i been inspired by the shapes of her bird prints. My bird prints have a lot of sharp points at the different colour changes and they are slightly rounded in places, i found that so are Nadia Taylor's which i didn't notice before and i may or may not have been inspired by this when creating my templates but i have only just noticed this and i really liked her birds and i like how this small effect has came out on my bird prints.

Evaluation. Communication Skills

21/02/16

I really enjoyed creating a blog and posting the progress i made through each lesson onto it. I liked posting the evaluations onto it as well, because i found my evaluations were easier to look at and they were all in one place which made it easier too.
I liked posting images of the progress i made in lessons onto my blog because i was able to look back at where i started to how i got to the finishing look, and posting images and taking the photos made it easier for me to remember what happened in each lesson and what we did.

I really liked creating a blog for my art work this term. And i think it could be helpful in the future to do something like this again with my work. I'd like to do this for my FMP because creating the blog was fun and posting everything i did from the beginning to now was helpful and it helped me complete my evaluations, as well as taking photos of my work.
I really liked how you can add to much onto a blog, with the photos i added and the videos and my evaluations, artist research etc. I've never done a blog before so this was really new to me, i didn't like the idea at first but then i really liked it as i got further into it.

Final evaluation. Drawing class

19/02/16

In this class we did different experiments with birds, using different materials to see how each one comes out differently.
Techniques i used for experiments were:
- Transfer with sellotape
- Inkblots
- Chalk on stick
- Collage
- Drawing with sewing machine
- Painting
- Two pens together
- Outline
- Emulsion drawing
- Ink drawing
- Opposite hand
- Continuous line
- Biro
- Stitch by hand
- Bird names
- Paper cutting
- Transfer with acetone
- Trace with pencil
- Tracing opposite hand
- Blind
- Mono printing
- Image transfer with acetate
- Tracing with fine liner
I enjoyed doing lots of these experiments because you got see use techniques that you haven't used before and you get to use these techniques more than once and you can see different outcomes you get. This it what i really like about doing experiments you can use different techniques and see what outcomes you can get, i also like using different techniques because you could find something that you didn't know you were good at and you could enjoy a particular technique which you hadn't used before.

I got good fedback with lots of the different experiments that i did. I especially got good feedback with using a collage technique and creating an A1 page of different birds using this technique.

Two things that went well. Firstly doing a page of collages seeing how each one turned out was good. Secondly drawing with the sewing machine, i enjoyed this because i like sewing and it wasn't a technique i had used before.

Final evaluation. Media

19/02/16

In this term we created a claymation. I enjoyed this because it was like an adaption to the stop motion we had done before but we used clay and this time we got to create our own characters. I liked learning what claymation is and drawing out my ideas for the clay model i was going to create. Creating the model bird was really fun to do and it was good to learn how you can make a clay model, it took longer than thought but it was really nice to see how it changed as you got further into making it and then seeing what it looked like once finished.
Creating the background was good and then putting the background and the clay model together was good too seeing what they looked like together. And then making the claymation was fun because you got to move around the model you had created and make a stop motion animation at the end. And once you had created the stop motion animation/claymation and made it into an MP4 you got to edit it in photoshop and make it so that it could have been doing anything with edits. I liked seeing the final outcome because you get to see everything come together.

I got good feedback, with my clay model when creating it and having help to make it better. I got good feedback when creating the claymation in photoshop too.

Two things that went well. Firstly creating my clay model bird. Secondly creating the claymation in photoshop.

Final evaluation. 3D

19/02/16

In this term we did shadow puppets. It was something i hadn't done before and something i enjoyed it was really different to my other lessons because at the end of the term we did a short film as a group with our shadow puppets, which was really good. Creating the shadow puppets was good because it was a little more complicated than i thought it would be, which i enjoyed because it got to learn something new and be a little more creative and it was also fun in this way because you had your shadow puppets and then you had to figure out which parts you want to move and then you had to piece them together and make them.
Making the short film at the end was fun because we worked as a group to do this and we had music on in the background well it was filming. This made the short film really good and fun to do, especially seeing the final short films at the end.

I got good feedback with my drawings at the beginning in our first lesson, choosing the different birds and then using black ink to draw them with and painting them black the detail i got in. Creating our shadow puppets and choosing the birds we had drawn with the black ink, which ones we were going to use. Adding the sticks to them and cutting the different parts out to make them move.

Two things that went well. Firstly creating our shadow puppets, cutting them out and attaching all the different parts together. Secondly creating the short films as a group.

Evaluation lesson 6. Media

10/02/16

I created a different background on A1 using paints for a more solid effect. I put it onto a table and made it stick by using masking tape on the back of the A1 sheet so that it would stick to the wall.
I put my bird into position and started taking photographs using the camera. Once i had finished taking photographs i uploaded them to the mac and dragged them into photoshop where i created my claymation once i had finished i saved it as an MP4 and then closed photoshop and re-opened it. I dragged the MP4 into photoshop and was able to do some editing to my claymation, i made the eyes blink. I saved this as an MP4 once i had completed it.

I recieved some help my the teacher and was told that the eyes when edited so that they were blinking were a little fast blinking.

Two things that went well. Firstly taking photographs of my bird for the claymation. Secondly creating them into an MP4 in a stopmotion animation style using photoshop.

I could make the eyes blink slower and maybe make my bird do something else next time.

Evaluation lesson 5. 3D

04/02/16

We added sticks to our shadow puppets. We cut out two long strips of cartridge paper and stuck them together using sticky tape we then attached this to our shadow puppets and we use this as our sticks we did this for each of our shadow puppets.
Once we had completed this we then went on to complete our short video with our shadow puppets as a group. We went behind a sheet of A1 tracing paper, the tracing paper was attached to two art stand at each side. There was a light behind the tracing paper so that our shadow puppets would look like better shadow puppets and their shadows would come out clearer, the lights were turned off and the blinds were down. Pete used a camera to record it. There was two people below the paper and two on the right and left of each side, Nat held up signs with our names to make it easier for us to know when to put our shadow puppets in view. We did two short videos with two different songs for each.

We received good feedback with the short films we had produced as a group.

Two things that went well were. Firstly creating the shadow puppets sticks. And secondly working as a group to create two short films.

Evaluation lesson 5. Drawing class

03/02/16

I did some more experiments.                                                                                                                  I did some drawings using the sewing machine. I did this with the rest of my images of my birds. I used black thread and I then mounted all of them once finished onto an A1 sheet of paper.

I got good feedback. My teacher said my work using the sewing machine was really good and that my birds looked good. She also said that we could try to use different colours of thread if I wanted to but I found that the black thread looked good alone.

Two things that went well were. Firstly the outcomes I got once I had finished drawing using the sewing machine. Secondly using the sewing machine was quit easy and I learned how to re-fill the bobbin.

I could improve on changing the stich and using more than one stick on each piece of fabric that could be a good experiment or using colour thread in my drawings using the sewing machine.

Evaluation lesson 5. Media

02/02/16

We started to take photographs and play around with our characters and with experimented with what our characters would do in the animation.
We also created a background using pens, we made it into a sunset and we added pop up grass. We found that this didn't work as well, because the background was pen and it wasn't as thick and solid which made the photographs we took look very plain and it looked quit simple. So we hope to create another background which will be painted onto an A1 sheet.

We got some feedback about how our background was peny and it could be better to have a background which has been painted instead of pens being used. We were also told to do this on an A1 sheet because we were struggling to take images of our animation on the A2 without getting the wall behind it into the shot.

Two things that went well. Firstly experimenting and playing around with the camera to see what our Claymation characters should be doing. Secondly creating a background and getting an idea of what our Claymation characters should be or will be doing.

We hope to create a different background with paints on an A1 sheet so that it will be easier for us to take photographs for our Claymation.

Final evaluation. Printmaking

01/02/16

Final evaluation

I enjoyed this term in printmaking. I enjoyed creating screen- prints, it was something i hadn't done before, i liked learning knew techniques in lessons and creating different pieces of art work.

The screen printing was something new which i had never done before and i liked seeing how it works and what different outcomes i could get.
Some of it was more difficult than other parts like getting each print in the right position and taping it to the screen. These were quit challenging.

Choosing the colours for my screen prints was good because there was a large range of colours to pick from and you could chose three different colours and you can mix the colours together in different ways which was good.

Choosing the bird i was going to use was good as i had a large range to pick from and creating the stencil for it was a little harder than i expected.
But i really liked my final outcomes for my screen prints. I like the chose of colours i picked and i liked how each time i did each print it didn't come out exactly where i wanted it to because it was interesting to see where it did come out and what it looks like in different positions.

Final evaluation. Photography

01/02/16

Final Evaluation

Overall i think that the work i produced was good.
We took photographs of birds and for some of them we edited in Photoshop. We chose one of the birds we liked and took lots of close up photographs for it and we then did some research on it and produced a power point for it.

In the power point we included:
- Birds Latin name
- Migration and family
- What does it eat?
- Facts
- Its's name
- Map, bird gif
- Images

For the gif we created j.pegs in Photoshop and we then converted them into a gif which showed our chosen bird moving around the UK areas that it goes to throughout the year. Onces we completed our gifs we saved them for web and we then added them into our power points.

My opinion.
I think that this terms unit on birds went well. I really enjoyed taking photographs and getting the different angles. I especially liked getting the close up photographs and seeing what angles worked well best and seeing all the detail i could get in.
I also enjoyed creating the power point as it was something new that we hadn't done before and it was really nice being able to add in photographs that i had taken myself. The gif was also good to add into the power point.
The gif was a little harder to create and adding in the bird and it's size was quit difficult. But i did enjoy creating the gif when i got the harder part of it done.
I liked seeing the final outcome of my gif and adding it to my power point and seeing my powerpoint once it was all complete.

Evaluation lesson 3. 3D

22/01/16

We cut out shadow- puppets using the black painted paper we painted last week. We added detail and used scissors &/or a scapulae/cutting knife.

Two things that went well. Firstly cutting out the shadow puppets went well. Secondly getting the shape of the birds shadow puppets figure went well by using the tracing paper and turning it over to trace it that way on the back of the black painted paper.

Evaluation lesson 2. 3D

15/01/16

We got an A2 piece of tracing paper and traced some of the drawings we did last week. We then flipped over the tracing paper and drew on lines on the back of the sheet, so on the A2 cartridge paper we had underneath the drawings came through.
We then cut them out and started cutting out the birds into different pieces and then attached them with clippy pins, so that different parts of them would move. Once we did this we attached a wooden stick to the back of the paper with sticky tape.
We then got two pieces of A2 cartridge paper and painted them black with ink paints.

I got good feedback.

Two things that went well. Firstly cutting the birds out and creating the different pieces to move. Secondly attaching the stick to the back of the paper birds.

Evaluation lesson 1. 3D

08/01/16

We drew birds, only the outline with black ink and painted them in, so that they were completely black with no other detail in them. We did this on A1. This was helping us to get an idea for our shadow- puppets that we will be making.

I got good feedback and my teacher said that the feet for my drawings were good and the shape of them really looked like the birds feet I was drawing from. And my teacher also liked the angles of the birds I was getting.

Two things that went well. Firstly I think that the angles that I chose were good. Secondly I think that getting the shapes in some areas were good.

I think that the time I took to draw them was slightly slow and I could have worked on the shapes of them a bit better.

Evaluation lesson 3. Media

20/01/16

We took pictures and uploaded them to our blogs. We finishing padding our birds skeletons out and then started adding the clay to them. And taking pictures as we went along to show our progress.

I received good feedback. Saying that my bird was coming along well.

Two things that went well. Firstly finishing padding the bird out. Secondly adding the clay to my bird.

Evaluation lesson 2. Media

13/01/16

We started to create our clay birds by getting two pieces of wire one short one long. The longest one we twisted and left a round circle at the top we parted the bottom of the wire to make it look like legs. For the shorter wire we put it in the middle of the longer wire in one of the twisted gaps and we then twisted it around the longer wire to hold it in place.
We got some tissue paper and put it around the middle of the wire to pad it out and used masking tape to hold it in place.
We also used masking tape to cover the sharp ends of the wire.

I got good feedback saying that my wire was twisted good and the padding was good too.

Two things that went well. Firstly Good padding it out. Secondly good twisting for a structure.

Evaluation lesson 1. Media

06/01/16

We looked at a video on how a stop motion animation is made in the industry. We then got a bird and drew it at different angles in coloured pencil and sketching pencils. We then went on to draw three ideas for our animation.
And we had to have completed our final drawing for our animation at all angles in colour by our next lesson and scanned them in onto a computer.

The teacher liked my ideas for my designs for my final outcome

Two things that went well. Firstly I got three ideas down in drawings for my final drawing ideas. Secondly I understand more on how stop motion animation works and how they produce it and how they get the characters into the shapes and designs and I also understand how they get them to move their joints and heads.

Evaluation lesson 4. Photography

25/01/16

In this lesson we finished off our power-points adding different themed backgrounds to them and adding images and the final information to them.
We also created a ‘gif.’ For web. We used the images of the birds moving around the UK which we created last lesson and made it into a gif which we then added into our power-points.

I received good feedback with my power-point and my gif.

Two things that went well. Firstly adding photographs into my power-point. Secondly creating the gif was good.

I could work on my work with gif’s. Remembering what to do and where on the Photoshop when creating a gif. And remembering how to save it once complete.

Evaluation lesson 3. Photography

18/01/16

We continued doing some research on birds and finding facts out about them. At the end of the lesson we started a power point on our chosen bird adding in images and facts we have found out.

We found a map of the UK on Google and we saved it and opened it in Photoshop. We also got an image of a bird and we edited it so that it came across brighter. Once we completed this we dragged it out so that it was in Photoshop but we could see both the map and bird. We dragged the bird onto Photoshop where the map was and we positioned it in places you might see it in the UK and for each time we moved it we saved it and had to do around 30 of these.

Two things that went well. Firstly saving each one of the bird moving around the map went well. Secondly creating the powerpoint and doing the research.

Evaluation lesson 2. Photography

11/01/16

Today we took some more photographs, and did some close ups. We then uploaded them onto the computer and edited some of them on Photoshop.
Once we did this we then had to look up their Latin names and if they migrate and where they do this and when they do this.

I got good feedback with the photographs I took and with the angles I got and the editing was good, colouring I edited in and the different angles I got.

Two things that went well. Firstly uploading them to the computer was easier. Secondly editing the different colours into the birds in photoshop.

I could improve on getting more close ups.

Evaluation lesson 1. Photography

04/01/16

We took photographs of stuffed birds in glass cases using the tripod stands. We put a piece of plain white paper behind it so that we had a clear background. We took photographs at all angles of the bird. We then uploaded them to the computer. Once we had uploaded them we then edited them in photoshop. We dragged the chosen image onto photoshop went into image- adjustments- levels we clicked on a tool which allows the background to go white and if you drag the black arrow along then it makes the main image of the bird go darker. Once we had completed this we went into image- adjustments- colour balance and we moved the arrow up and down the levels so that my chosen bird looked more to its colour. We also used a tool which made the colours blend in so the edges of the glass box weren’t visible.

The feedback I received was good and we talked about what could be edited in the future on one of the photographs I took.

Two things that went well. Firstly I think that blending the backgrounds in so that the bird looked like it wasn’t in a box went well. And secondly I also think taking the photographs of the bird at all different angles went well.

I could work on using the blending tool a bit better so it looked like it blended in better.

Printmaking class progress

Evaluation lesson 5. Printmaking class

01/02/16

In today's lesson i added my third and final print colour to my screen print. I mixed two different shades of blue so that i got a striped effect. I then started writing my final evaluation.

I got good feedback. My chosen colours worked well together.

Two things that went well. Firstly choosing my third colours. And secondly printing them onto my screen prints.

I could improve on getting my prints in the right position or more closely to the right position.
